Semi-Moist Dog Food–Inspecting Packaging

One of the very simple keys to maintaining good dog health is to be sure of the food you feed your dog. With this in mind, we advise that when buying the semi-moist sort of dog food that you do a thorough inspection of the packaging especially when buying the cellophane wrapped kind.

keep in mind the following pointers:

  • The cellophane should be pliable, not brittle.
  • Be sure the cellophane is Not off color.
  • Bags that are pillow-pouched should have a tiny bit of air that cannot escape under the pressure of the firm squeeze.
  • Do an inspection of the wrapper to check for dull spots, grey spots, and/or black spots. These indicate mold.
  • Check for any shiny, white, or yellow spots. These indicate bacteria.

Because the semi-moist variety of dog foods are somewhat moist, they are not produced using high-heat exposure. Thus, they can be vulnerable to mold and bacteria contamination.

After your in-the-shop inspection and purchase and you are ready to feed your dog, do one final inspection. When you tear the cellophane, pay attention to the odors upon opening. Feel the food. Take a chunk and squeeze it. It should soft, tender, and somewhat spongy. The food might even give a tactile sense of lubrication. However, the food should not be wet or moist on the surface.

If the food passes the test, it should be good to go for your dog. If you suspect the food might be bad, take it back to the store where you bought it. Do not put your dog at risk. Most businesses will refund your money and if not, you might consider a Better Business Bureau report or contact with the public health authorities. This should be a last resort, but I encourage you not to be squeamish on this if you think the food might be unhealthy.
