If you planning on adopting a rescue dog or a dog from a shelter, it’s important to understand that not all adoption facilities are equal. It’s important to understand where you are adopting a dog from and the nature of the facility. If you take a little time to do some basic research, you’ll be doing both your dog a great service.

There are three basic options for dog adoption. First, there are private agencies, such as the Humane Society or the SPCA. Second, there are public shelter facilities, like your local dog pound. And third, you can search want ads, classifieds, and online sites such as craigslist. In his post, I’m going to say a few words about the first two options.

You may wonder how a public facility like the dog and private organizations such as the Humane Society are different. Basically the Humane Society or the SPCA are dedicated to rescue and care of animals. The Humane Society and SPCA also concern themselves with litigation. You’ve probably seen examples of this on the Animal Planet. (Private organizations are also privately supported.)

Here, of course, we’re concerned about canines. Local public facilities, such as dog pounds are operated by the city government. Their purpose is primarily concerned with control of the animal population. Public shelters will vary greatly from city to city and state to state. And likewise the education and awareness and motivation of the personnel will also vary greatly. My point here is to exercise caution when seeking an adoption facility or a means of adoption.

If you if you are not terribly experienced with the, but we suggest dealing with the SPCA or with the public facility that has a good reputation for having a knowledgeable and caring staff. In that way, you’ll be able to get the help and support you need in adopting a puppy or adult dog that’s right for you. And moreover, you’ll be more likely to get the assistance you need to make the dogs transition to your ownership smoothed and successful.

As a final word, I always recommend taking the time to educate yourself through reliable dog behavior and training study.
