How to Stop Your Puppy’s Destructive Chewing–Essential Cool Tips

The fact is, all puppy’s chew. This is one of the way’s in which they explore their world. However, it is an unfortunate fact that a new puppy’s compulsive chewing can be destructive. As anyone who has had a new puppy knows, everything is fair game, and if you leave anyting valuable with in reach, such as a pair of leather shoes, or an oriental rug, watch out. Don’t be surprised to find that your puppy has chewed it apart while you back was turned for an instant.

It is important to understand that chewing is a natural activity, that there is no sane way in which we can prevent a puppy from chewing. In fact, were we to do so, we would probably produce a disturbed and neurotic dog. So we dont’ want to stop all chewing, we just want to stop the puppy’s destructive chewing. And to be completely honest, we are going to really be focussing more on diverting the destructive chewing. To help minimize the damage and keep you sane, we have a few tips:

puppy-proof your residence
always exercise your puppy
play with your puppy
encourage calmness
crate/kennel train your puppy
give your puppy chewing alternatives and reward it for using the alternatives
put all valuable items out of reach

One other important piece of advice is to not play tug-of-war. I know, this is adorable, but it reinforces chewing. When your puppy does engage in chewing destructively, do not become angry, scold, or punish the dog. At this stage, the puppy doesn’t know any better and is merely chewing because it must do so because of its stage of development.

Rescue dogs often chew for different reasons, usually as a result of abuse and anxiety. This, too, can be handled, though is a different situation from normal puppy chewing.

Believe it or not, the information in this post is enough to resolve normal, destructive chewing by new puppies. However, the best way to prepare yourself for the situations you are likely to encounter, or are already encountering, is to take action and gain a thorough education and understanding of dog behavior.
