Stop puppy biting right now with this easy method . . . .
Yes, you can stop your puppy from biting! This method works especially well with new puppies and the younger the better. As with all, or almost all, dog training techniques, you must apply patience, persistence, and gentle firmness. It is also important that you are clearly the dominant member of the “pack” (and this is also a sort of universal dog training principle). Time to get started.
Whenever your puppy begins to bit, chew and nip on your fingers and toes, gently but firmly hold its muzzle closed until it begins to whine. Hold for a few moments longs, release, and then let the puppy lick your hand. When the puppy repeats nipping and chewing on your hands, repeat the procedure. You can also give the puppy a small piece of food as a reward for not chewing. As I mentioned above, it is important to be persistence, patient, and always, always, always be gentle and firm.
One other optional step that I’ll mention is that when the puppy bites your fingers you can give a yelp as if in pain. That will get the puppy’s attention, and then you hold its muzzle closed. However, it isn’t necessary to scold or put any other negative emotional content across to the puppy.
Some other dog techniques that teach how to stop a puppy from biting or chewing advise using a loud, rebuking “NO” command, but I, personally, don’t think it’s necessary. For a new puppy who has never suffered abuse or neglect, stopping the puppy from biting and chewing on fingers, toes, arms, hands and so forth shouldn’t generally require more effort than described above.
Give this a try. Follow the procedure I’ve outlined every time you catch your puppy nipping at your fingers, and we think you’ll stop your puppy from biting within a week.
As always, I suggest learning as much as you can about dog and puppy behavior through reliable independant study or even taking a course through a local community college.
