How to stop constant dog barking
is one of the most frequently asked questions among dog owners. Perhaps this is the case with you, and if so, I think I may be able to help put you on the path to solving the “dog barking training” problem. First, I’d like to review some general advice about how to control your dog’s barking. I’ll try to be specific enough that you’ll be able to put this to use in the next 10 minutes.
Generally speaking, the best way to control dog barking is to properly socialize your dog so that he is secure and confident around different people and in different situations. You also want to establish a strong chew toy habit so that the dog is often physically occupied. Now, although you probably don’t want to silence your dog completely, you do want to establish a bit of control over the barking so that, ideally, he will bark and remain quiet on command.
One quick method to begin with is what I’ll call the muzzle method. When you dog starts barking, gently and firmly hold his muzzle closed until he begins to whine. Give the command, “no bark,” or some other command of your choosing, such as “shush” that you plan to train your dog to recognize. After giving the command, and after the dog obeys even briefly, reward your dog with praise and/or a treat. Treats are fine, but I don’t recommend you becoming dependent on them to get your dog to behave. It is important to in a friendly, positive manner when you use this technique. The point is not to punish but to encourage your pet to change his behavior by you showing him what you want. I think you’ll see results fairly quickly depending on the age of your dog and how deeply ingrained the habit of barking is. I have recently used this technique on an adult German Shepherd and began to see results within two days.
Believe it or not, it is possible to teach your dog to bark and be silent on cue. The procedure is fairly simple but a little more involved than the last method. Basically, you enlist the cooperation of three friends. This method, by the way, will use treats as motivators. Instruct your accomplices to knock on your door, and when your dog barks, give it a reward and say, “thank you,” or some other command to indicate approval for the barking. Be sure to give it a treat. Next, repeat the door knocking, but this time when your dog barks, give him a “shush” command and hold a treat in front of his nose. The point of the treat is to attract his attention to cause him to be silent. As soon as he stops barking, give him the treat and praise. You will need to repeat this over a period of days to establish the behavior.
In part 2, I will talk about specific types of dog barking behavior and strategies you can use to bring the barking under control.
