Controlling Puppy Nipping and Biting

I know puppy biting and little puppy nips may seem adorable, but never let your puppy bite. If you let it continue, it will become a bad habit and be hard to break later on when your adult dog biting will not be so cute but painful and destructive. Here’s how you can put a stop to this in a quick, easy, and gentle manner.

Some trainers suggest that if your puppy bites your hands, give him a tap on his nose or under his chin. This may be successful, but I have what I think is a much better and kinder way to break your puppy of the habit of mouthing and nipping. When your puppy bites or nips your hands, gently hold his muzzle closed until he begins to whine. Let him whine for a few moments and then release. This will not harm your puppy at all and will quickly bring results. Whenever you play with your puppy, and he nips your hand, just do as I’ve described.

It is important to be aware that if you allow your puppy to nip and bit, he may later become much bolder and aggressive as he matures. What normally happens is that once the dog is a year old or more, the typical dog owner may take the pet to a professional trainer break the dog of the habit. A do that has not been broken of the habit of biting will be a nuissnce to both you and the people you live around. And it doesn’t have to be. This is a very easy habit to break a puppy of, and you can accomplish this easily, quickly, and humanely in the manner described above.

Please heed this tip and control your puppy while he is young, trainable, and eager to please you.
