Break Your Puppy of Jumping on You, Friends, and Strangers

A common problem and a question that comes my way almost every day is, “how do I get my dog to stop jumping on me.” It’s a fact that puppies and dogs who jump on you and your friends are really only looking for attention. Now, it is your duty–and really, it should be a pleasure–to give it to your dog. But if, when you come home or enter a room, your puppy runs over and jumps on you, immediately–but gently and firmly–push him off. Be sure to then bend over and pet him. When your dog or puppy comes over to you for affection, bend over to pet him. When your dog jumps up on you, be sure to repeat pushing him off. And remember, too, never be angry or abusive. All it takes is gentle firmness.

Breaking your puppy of jumping on friends and strangers is also easily accomplished, but requires a slightly different strategy. In this case, have the puppy on a leash when a caller comes to the door and as the puppy starts to jump up, pull him back (be gentle but firm). then ask your friend to reach down and pet him.

Any time you pull your puppy back off balance, say “No, easy,” to him. It is best to have a collar on your puppy at this time. The collar should not be heavy and it should fit properly. If you wish to teach your dog later on to stand up against you, this may work. Encourage him to stand against you by saying, “Up,” and patting your chest. If the dog jumps and leans on you too heavily, gently tap him in the chest. Encourage him to try again, and when he leans against you lightly, praise him with your voice and pet him.
