Training Techniques For Your Golden Retriever

One of the most intelligent and elegant dog breeds is the Golden Retriever.

Very bright, they quickly learn new things.

Always be patient with your Goldie, especially if you find your dog slow in grasping commands to activities that are not natural to him.

By attending a basic obedience class with your Golden Retriever will provide you with the basics of how to communicate with your dog and develop a rapport.

It is recommended that you do not use the leash training method with Goldie’s because of the delicate nature, but instead practice the Rewards obedience method.

Goldie’s respond excellently to positive interaction, so always pet and compliment your dog when he obeys your commands.

Since Golden Retrievers respond so well to verbal commands, this is the best way to train them.

It is easiest to start with the ‘sit’ command. When you Goldie ‘sits’ reward him. When he learns that he will be rewarded for obeying commands he will have an incentive to obey.

After your Golden Retriever has learned to ‘sit’, then you can proceed to other commands you want him to learn, such as ‘lie down’. And remember, always reward obedience.

‘Go’ and ‘Stop’ need to be taught next. A leash can be used to assist you in this, as it is easily apparent to a dog that a loose leash connected to the word ‘Go’ means he can go. And the reverse for ‘Stop’. Don’t forget rewards.

It is recommended that harder commands such as ‘stay’ are taught further in your dogs obedience training. Teach only one command at a time so you don’t confuse your dog. A confused dog can’t correctly understand and obey.

Complicated commands should be taught only after you and your dog are firmly grounded with the basic commands.

You should always go through those commands when you teach a new one, first as reinforcement, and second, to make sure he isn’t confusing the new command with one of the older ones.
