Puppies can get bored if they do not have any dog toys to play with. When they are alone they may not spend much time thinking, but need some kind of activities to keep them busy. They may chew on furniture or dig in the garden if they don’t have anything to do. Dogs are truly intelligent and need mental stimulation and entertainment to be happy. Toys also have the benefit of tiring them out a bit.
Research shows that dogs learn by play. Getting them novel games and challenges may keep them connected to learning new ideas. They have a natures way of wanting to make their masters happy and they are pleased to do whatever is requested of them.
There are several different kinds of learning toys on the market. A treat ball has an opening in it where you can hide his favorite food inside. It can be used to teach him how to solve a problem, and they are good for when the animal is left home alone, he will be glad to have something to do that will occupy his time, and give him a treat.
Games that you can play with your pet like catch or fetch can make a strong partnership develop between the pup and the owner. It gives the dog a sense of who is in charge of playtime, and when it will start and stop.
Hide and seek games are favorites of dogs. They naturally like to hunt for things. When you hide your pets favorite toy, he can use his sense of smell to find it, he would also love to look for his owner if he hides around the house, and is proud of himself when he finds him.
Stuffed animals can be a big comfort to some dogs, especially when he is an “only” pet, and they may carry them around like a baby, or sleep with them like a brother or sister. Other canines see these as prey and they have the instinctive nature to kill the stuffed toy, and rip all the stuffing out of it. They also have stuffed animals made for learning, and they can teach your pet how to find squeaky eggs inside. These can be played with over and over.
Playthings that have stimulation for the brain, plus keeping your pet active, can make your dog smarter. But remember intelligence is not everything, dogs can make up for lack of brain power by having a good personality, or by being friendly and submissive. Sometimes the best pooch is one who forgets and forgives.
