How to Train Your Dog to Stop Begging

If your dog has started begging for food or has already develped the habit, then its time to train your dog to stop begging. Don’t worry, this is not difficult, though you will need the patience to apply the training until you’ve achieved the result you want. In other words, as with all dog training, you must be willing to repeat the same action again and again in order to teach your dog the correct behavior.

4 Tips to get your dog to stop begging

  1. A general rule of thumb to always apply is to ignore your dog when it begs. If the dog has only just started manifesting the begging behavior, this may be enough.
  2. Reproduce situations in which your dog normally begs. When the dog starts begging, tell it no (or give it some other specific command) and put it out of the room, or in a different part of the room. When the dog stays for a moment, give it praise and a treat.
  3. Repeat the scenario, and when the dog begs, put it in another room or some other designated space. Give praise and a treat.
  4. Run each training session for 10 or 15 minutes. It is important that you never make any exceptions and give the dog food when it begs. All it takes is one exception for the dog to learn that begging results in food. Allow a month for consistent results.

These 4 tips if applied consistently and without making any exception will allow you to correct the dog begging behavior. Remember, you must be inexhaustibly patient, persistent, and use gentle, asertive firmness at all times.
